The challenge
We found that the current website structure was over-complicated. The navigation was confusing and had multiple groupings for the same content.
The challenge was to identify a simplified site structure to improve users experience and findability of content, and provide a consistent content layout and design across the site.
Approach
A comprehensive review of the website included analysis of usage analytics and an expert review of the usability of the site structure, navigation, functionality, page layout, content, search and forms.
From this we were able to recommend how the site should be re-structured, provide tailored guidelines for content development, and undertake the strategic analysis required to inform the sites future redevelopment.
Outcomes
The findings of the review resulted in a successful case to employ a dedicated person to manage the website. The findings can also directly inform a future Request for Quote to redevelop the site.
Our recommendations were designed to directly inform the future redevelopment of the site. For example, our recommended site navigational scheme features consistent labelling, standard navigation cues, and search options to improve usability. Improving scannability of the content is important and we identified mechanisms such as the use of sub-headings and tailored navigational features in the content to facilitate easy scanning.
Included in our recommendations were actions that could improve the current site. For example to improve user engagement with the content, we recommended that displaying the most popular, high priority content on the homepage was added as a feature.
